RIBA House of the Year 2019

Converted from a barn and a shed, House Lessans in County Down, Northern Ireland has been named RIBA House of the Year for 2019. Awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects every year to the best architect designed house in the UK, this modernist family home was constructed on a tight budget, proving that life enhancing architecture doesn’t have to cost the earth.

The judges said that building a home of this scale for just £335,000 was a ‘remarkable achievement’ and it saw off stiff competition from the other shortlisted buildings. The three bedroom property has only one bathroom and a living area comprising a kitchen, sitting room, separate snug and a mezzanine office with a pantry beneath. Drinking in the countryside views through its large windows, the L shaped design is constructed from white rendered concrete blockwork topped with zinc roofing. This use of basic building materials combined with the simple arrangement of the rooms and various cost saving ideas helped ensure that the client’s modest budget was well spent, creating a truly bespoke dream home.
